Whole peels, strips, granules and powders: choosing a format
Format changes how a citrus ingredient looks, doses and behaves in a blend. The names used in trade can vary, so pair the format name with a measurable description or reference sample.
Whole pieces and larger peel
Large pieces are often chosen where the ingredient remains visible: a tea blend, a culinary mix or a decorative inclusion. Appearance may matter as much as aroma, which makes an agreed range for piece size, colour and breakage useful.
Clarify how much natural variation is acceptable. Citrus is an agricultural raw material; a specification should define the acceptable range rather than promise identical appearance from every lot.
Strips and slices
Strips or slices can offer a recognisable appearance with more regular sizing. They may be considered for beverage garnishes, confectionery and retail blends, but terms such as “strip” are not specifications on their own.
Useful clarifying points include nominal width and length, the amount of fines tolerated, whether pith is acceptable and whether a visual reference is available.
Cut material and granules
Smaller cut formats are commonly selected for blends where consistency and distribution matter. You can request a sieve range or a target particle-size band if that is relevant to your process.
Ask whether the stated size describes an average, a range or a screening result. This distinction is particularly important where material will be blended automatically or extracted.
Powders need extra clarity
Powder may simplify dosing, but it makes the definition of the raw material, milling approach, particle size and intended use more important. It may also have different packaging and storage considerations from larger pieces.
When you request a powder trial, specify the application, desired fineness, any allergen or cross-contact questions, target country and the documents your quality team expects. We will confirm availability for your fruit type and quantity.
